Castle Newnham

English as an Additional Language

At Castle Newnham, we have a wide range of strategies and systems in place to support our pupils who have English as an Additional Language (EAL). All pupils who speak English as an Additional Language have their English proficiency assessed on arrival at school.  We use the Bell Foundation Proficiency in English Scale to make these formative assessments:

A - New to English

B - Early Acquisition

C - Developing Competence

D - Competent

E - Fluent

Pupils are supported via adaptations to their normal lessons or additionally, by small group sessions focusing on phonics, grammar and vocabulary. The sessions are grouped by proficiency in English level.

We aim to develop speaking, listening, reading and writing skills to ensure that each pupil is able to access the curriculum to the best of their abilities.

We also intend to enable them with functional skills in English, which will support our pupils in their social communications and in the real world outside school.

Our EAL pupils speak a wide range of languages including Ukrainian, Polish, Romanian, Spanish, Russian, Arabic, Urdu and Pashto as well as other languages from around the world.
